We are Mostra: a women, minority, veteran, and immigrant-owned micro coffee roaster based in north county San Diego. We believe a quality cup of coffee brings people together, and that excellence served with a smile will inspire goodness in your days. We eagerly embrace sustainability and cherish our responsibility to create opportunities which improve lives and families across the globe. We’re driven by innovation — in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in coffee, beer, and creativity, because the best performances offer the best of life. So, welcome! How it began.
Our story begins with four friends and one big question: “what would it look like to build a business that could make a difference — in our own backyard, and around the world?”
The idea struck Jelynn Malone and Beverly Magtanong while on a trip to the Philippines, building homes for the poor. Even though Jelynn and Beverly were content in their then-professions — Hollywood and television performing arts and professional opera, respectively — the idea would not leave their side. So the two gathered Beverly’s husband Sam, an Army Veteran and Healthcare Administrator with a keen business sense, along with good friend Mike Arquines: a professional fine dining chef and home coffee roaster.
With their gifts, passion, and a shared Filipino heritage combined, the four friends set forward to serve coffee with a mission. Named “Mostra” for the Italian word for performance, the four founders strove to offer top-quality coffee and products made to elevate performance to the highest level, creating ripples of impact from San Diego across the world:
– Locally, investing in the San Diego community while empowering employees through education and training that would transform transitional jobs into long-term careers, and
– Globally: sourcing high-quality beans from the Philippines — shining light on a lesser-known coffee belt region while giving back to the community that inspired them years earlier.
From an idea to a warehouse; our first retail location in Carmel Mountain Ranch to more shops opening regionally and abroad… We at Mostra Coffee are honored to continue serving you, our loyal, amazing customers and communities, and to continue inspiring the best out of life for you and those around you.
From starting a company to help farmers around the globe build generational wealth for their families – to winning coffee of the year in 2020 – because we are coffee nerds. It’s good to create coffee for our customers that no only tastes good but does good.
