About this Coffee

Red cherries are delivered to the Lahamenegu mill from various smallholders and plantations who then manage sorting and processing each coffee. Because the weather in Goroka is much drier than in the mountains and at the coast, the dry parchment is kept there until just before being shipped.

Coffee has first been planted in Papua New Guinea in the late 19th century, but it was not until the 1920s, that it became a commercial product. Two mountain ranges run through the country: the Bismarck Range and the Owen Stanley Range. Coffee is exclusively produced in the Bismarck Range, the home of ancient volcanoes like Mount Hagen and Mount Giluwe. In the past, land selection for coffee production was not based on scientific principles, rather coffee gardens and estates were developed on what land became available. The volcanic soil in this area is very fertile, making it one of the biggest coffee cherry suppliers of Papua New Guinea.
