About this Coffee

We are delighted to offer our first Kenyan coffee in over 2 years: a traditional washed lot bursting with notes of lime, pineapple, and juniper.

This single origin coffee was sourced from the slopes of Mount Kenya in the Manyatta division of Embu County, a veritable Garden of Eden for coffee interspersed with rivers and waterfalls.

GICHERORI WASHING STATION

The Gicherori Washing Stations sits on the slopes of Mount Kenya in the Manyatta division of Embu County, which is a veritable Garden of Eden for coffee. It’s densely populated, but is one of the places in Kenya where small coffee plots continue to thrive. Embu is a place that’s run through with rivers and waterfalls, so it’s no surprise that clean water is a matter of pride for those who live in the area, or to see the stellar water management at the washing station in Gicherori.

Gicherori is part of the Kibugu Farmers Co-operative Society, which brings farmers from the neighboring communities of Gikirima, Ndunduri, and Ngerwe together. Members have an average of 1-hectare of land for coffee, and also grow tea, macadamia nuts, bananas, and corn. Kibugu has a field committee charged with mobilizing quality, and on designated field days farmers will receive on-site training customized to their farm. Between this and an advance payment program, they encourage farmers to stay active in the group and in their fields between each harvest.

WHY WE LOVE THIS COFFE

Kenya occupies one of the top spots amongst the world’s most beloved coffee producing countries, yet it is an outlier; while the trend in many other producing countries around the world is for producers to experiment with different varieties and processing methods, for producers in Kenya, experimentation is not a priority or widely practiced. With washed coffees working so well, you won’t find many willing to mess around with different fermentations, flotation, or drying times. Still, top lots are consistently some of the best and most expensive coffees in the world.
