Sometimes you want some caffeine in your coffee but not as much as usual, that’s why we came up with 50/50 Blend. This certified organic blend combines Mocha Java with Decaf Shakeout, providing the perfect balance of flavor and caffeine for many of us.
Mocha Java is synonymous with fruit-forward flavors. We combine a pair of coffees from Ethiopia, a blueberry-like natural processed coffee, and a vibrant, citrus- and floral-toned washed coffee. The blend is completed with a wet-hulled coffee from Sumatra, which creates a complex, softly fruity cup.
When combined with Decaf Shakeout, the flavors of 50/50 Blend sweeten up further, adding notes of chocolate and nuts. In order to keep Decaf Shakeout fresh and lively through the year, coffees from some of our favorite Latin American origins are selected. The current version is made up entirely of coffee from Peru’s Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros Selva Central (APROSELVA) cooperative, which is based in the Junín growing region. APROSELVA is dedicated to improving the livelihood of its members, providing training and financing aimed at increasing quality, yields and producer earnings.
WHY WE LOVE THIS COFFEE
GOOD COFFEE, BETTER PLANET
Kayon Mountain Estate owner Ismael Hassen Aredo provides training for 140 nearby smallholder farmers, helps finance social initiative projects such as the construction of schools, and plans to build a bridge across the Sawana River to make the walk to school for the children of the community more safe. The coffee holds both Fair Trade and Organic certifications.
In addition to producing great coffee, one of the reasons we were initially attracted to Ketiara, is the fact that it is led by a charismatic woman named Rahmah. After working in coffee for many years, she helped found Ketiara in 2009 with just 38 members and currently serves as the co-op’s chairperson. In the years since it was established, the co-op membership has expanded to nearly 2,000 smallholder farmers, over 50% of them being women. The coffee Equator purchases is exclusively from the women members of the co-op; they refer to this special selection as Queen Ketiara. We pay an additional premium for the “Queen” designation, with proceeds going to programs that benefit women. The coffee holds both Fair Trade and Organic certifications.
