About this Coffee
This coffee comes to us from the farm of Juana Escobar Gaspar, a small parcel nestled in the highlands of Western Guatemala, near the town of Concepción Huista. Juana is a part of the CODECH cooperative, an organization we’ve worked with closely since 2010. This single-farmer lot is a shining representation of the quality that can be achieved in this area through thoughtful picking, processing, and rigorous quality control. Look for notes of citrus, plum, and golden raisin in this densely sweet coffee.
Pronunciation: HWAN-uh ES-co-bar GAS-par
As winter turns to spring, members of the CODECH cooperative’s three primary associations begin to harvest their coffee cherries and process them on the farm. Hundreds of growers deliver their coffee to the CODECH bodegas, and from each delivery a sample is drawn to be tasted by their team of expert quality analysts. Many of these deliveries are blended together and sold as either bulked or regional lots. But when a farmer delivers a coffee that is head and shoulders above the rest, it’s set aside to offer at a premium to incentivize and reward quality. Over the past several years, we’ve noticed there are a few producers that consistently find their place among the top scorers—and Juana Escobar Gaspar is one of them. After hundreds of cups tasted, Juana’s coffee was once again identified by the cooperative as one of their best this harvest, and our sourcing team couldn’t agree more. This lot is not only a celebration of the hard work of a quality focused producer, but also a shining example of the stunning profile of this storied growing region.
We believe in paying more.
Since 2009, we have published an annual transparency report to serve as a blueprint for our green coffee purchasing practices and a response to chronically low prices in the coffee industry. We believe paying more for green coffee is an important investment in the long-term viability of our coffee-growing partners’ businesses and our supply.
