About this Coffee
Situated throughout seven communities, Idido members reside in some of the region’s highest-elevation coffee-growing areas. Coffees from this part of the world are renowned for their sweet and delicate flavors. We’ve purchased coffee from the cooperative since 2011, and every year, Idido is one of our favorite releases. Look for floral, melon, and citrus notes.

The Idido cooperative produces some of our most stunning coffee each year. Staggering elevation, ideal climates, and unique coffee varieties make this a truly special coffee region. Since 2011, we’ve worked with the co-op to separate lots from specific communities or washing stations. We’ve also experimented with screen separations and special-preparation lots focused on coffee cherry ripeness and drying techniques.
Nearby Yirgacheffe is one of the most famous coffee towns in Ethiopia, if not the entire coffee-drinking world. When we first traveled to Yirgacheffe, it was hard to believe that a town so tiny could have such a reputation. Its renown, however, is well earned. There are nearly 2,000 members in the Idido co-op. The producers typically work small plots of land around their homes, averaging 1.5 hectares, diversely planted with various crops and shade trees. The region is one of Ethiopia’s most densely populated, second only to Addis Ababa, making the diversity of the ecosystem impressive. While a large percentage of the area’s population grows coffee as a cash crop, a majority are subsistence farmers growing an array of fruits, vegetables, and beans.
We believe in paying more.
Since 2009, we have published an annual transparency report to serve as a blueprint for our green coffee purchasing practices and a response to chronically low prices in the coffee industry. We believe paying more for green coffee is an important investment in the long-term viability of our coffee-growing partners’ businesses and our supply.
