About this Coffee

Our search for decaf coffee started our early in Alma Coffee’s history. We explored what decaffeinating our own coffee would look like, but sadly the best options we could find included decaffeinating entire containers (more than 40,000 pounds) at a time and shipping these containers to other countries to do so. With our focus on always having the freshest coffee from our family farms, we knew the lead times, extended transits, and sheer volume was not in line with our ideal business practices and would result in less-than-extraordinary cup.

That’s when we began doing research on an official direct-trade partnership for decaf. Our search led us to a family-owned Nicaraguan farm called Selva Negra that warehouses their decaf in Atlanta, GA.—only miles from our warehouse and roastery! We loved everything about this decaf from the taste, the farm practices, and their use of a mountain water process for decaffeination.

So, what exactly is mountain water decaf processing? In a nutshell, pure water from super high mountains is used to steam the green bean and prepare it for extraction. Using a water-based saturation solution, the caffeine is removed from the beans while keeping the bean’s natural flavor compounds in place. The result is more flavorful decaffeinated beans without the use of harsh chemicals!

Roast Story:

Slumber is our second decaf offering here at Alma; We wanted to round out our options for decaf lovers and include something a little lighter than our original decaf roast, Dreamer. For Slumber, we absolutely love the surprising complexity that you’ll get out of this roast and truly think you’ll be surprised to learn decaf offerings could be so delicious.
