About this Coffee
Apart from being an unbelievably delicious coffee, we fell in love with the background on this coffee. This coffee, called Mapendo (which means “love” in Swahili) by its farmers, is produced by a group of primarily widowed women who have lost their partners due to the conflicts that have destabilized parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Just as Alma prioritizes paying homage to women in the industry, this group of women focuses on their key pillar of gender justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Roast Story:
As mentioned in the origin story, the team loved this coffee before we even roasted it. This coffee has a nice savoriness to it that we wanted to highlight through a medium roast. The body was full and smooth, so we believe a medium roast is the perfect way to get those soft nutty notes while keeping the body of the coffee in tact. This coffee was very different than what we normally gravitate towards and although not highlighted in the tasting notes, it can be very reminiscent of green tea along with those grain, nut, and citrus notes.
