About this Coffee

SGD 21
Worka Nenke originates from small-scale farmers in Ethiopia’s Yirgacheffe region, specifically Nenke. Despite its rich coffee history, this area grapples with challenges such as climate change, the Coffee Berry Borer pest, market instability, and expensive inputs.

To address these challenges, producers are engaged in environmental conservation initiatives, including the adoption of sustainable tree varieties and collaboration with stakeholder organizations to ensure fair pricing. They also prioritize soil health by integrating compost and planting shade trees to create an optimal coffee-growing environment. These producers are termed ‘passive organic’ as they rely on natural methods for fertilization and pest control due to limited access to chemicals.

The coffee cherries undergo meticulous hand-picking and sorting to remove both underripe and overripe ones. Following sorting, the cherries are pulped to remove their outer layer and placed in tanks for fermentation lasting 48 to 72 hours, breaking down the mucilage.

After fermentation, the coffee is rapidly channeled through water to remove any remaining mucilage. It is then evenly spread on raised beds for sun drying until it reaches the desired moisture level. During this drying phase, the coffee is shielded from intense sunlight to prevent any cracking.

The coffee exhibits delicate hints of magnolia florals, a lively citrusy acidity, and a nectarine-like sweetness in the finish.
